About Mealoha Kraus
Mealoha Kraus was a well-loved Hawai‘i Life broker and the HLCF’s first Board Chair. She lost her battle with breast cancer in late 2019. Mealoha was a leader in every sense of the word, and under her leadership, the HLCF raised and distributed more than $200,000 in 2018 to help with recovery efforts from the flooding on Kaua‘i and O‘ahu, and the volcanic eruption on Hawai‘i Island. Mealoha remains a guiding light for the HLCF as we grow, and we honor the contributions she has made to this profession, her community, family, and Hawai‘i Life.
About the Mealoha Kraus People’s Choice Award
The recently renamed Mealoha Kraus People’s Choice Award allows the Hawai‘i public to choose an additional grant recipient each year from the eligible charities who applied for the Hawai‘i Love grant, but who were not initially selected.
Each year, Hawai‘i Life agents and brokers collectively choose a giving focus for the Hawai‘i Life Charitable Fund (HLCF). The HLCF makes grants available through the Hawai‘i Love grant program to eligible 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations across the state whose programs align with both our mission and our giving focus for that year. In 2020, our giving focus was Ocean Awareness.
Each April, the HLCF Board of Directors selects one grant recipient on Kaua‘i, O‘ahu, Maui and the Big Island. Four local charities receive grants in the amount of $5,000 each. In April, 2020, the preferred nonprofit was decided by popular vote that resulted in the award of an additional $5,000 grant from the HLCF.
The O Makuʻu Ke Kahua Community Center was chosen to receive the Mealoha Kraus People’s Choice Award. The grant award in the amount of $5,000 from the Hawai‘i Life Charitable Fund (HLCF) went to support the nonprofit organization, whose primary goal is to enhance the Hawaiʻi Island community’s knowledge on Native Hawaiian culture, values and traditions through our programs, market, and center.
2022 Mealoha Kraus People’s Choice Grant Report – Awarded to the Hawai‘i Forest Institute
The Hawai‘i Forest Institute was able to make many achievements in 2022 with the help of the Mealoha Kraus People’s Choice Award grant of $10,000. Our forest restoration and education projects fitted nicely with Hawaii Life Charitable Fund focus for 2022, “Hawaiiana- Perpetuating the culture, traditions and history of our first ancestors who settled these Hawaiian Islands”.
