What better time to look for the most relaxing house on the island than right now? Come experience Zen with a view.
Situated in lush wilds on the windward coastline of Oahu, this elegant four bedroom three bathroom luxury home awaits. Wind up the coastal Kamehameha Highway roughly 45 minutes from Honolulu to Laie Bay.
Behind a private motorized gate and up a custom rock wall lined with night blooming cereus, find your island paradise. There is an exotic entryway with double doors that swing wide open to reveal a zen garden, landscaped with bamboo, bougainvillea, and many other plants. There is storage in the entryway for garden tools, pool toys, or anything else.
As you walk into the house, you can’t help but notice the sharp geometric lines that have been used in its design. A unique accent in the roof where the lines continue to extend beyond the apex of the roofline are simple touches that add a flare of tasteful design. Designed by Tom Mitchell of Mitchell Design out of Seattle as well as the original owner, this home is a zen-like masterpiece.
The front doors of the home itself open to an entryway where the central courtyard and torii gate is visible. A traditional Japanese torii gate is said to be the place where you pass from the mundane into a sacred space. Off of this courtyard are the three bedrooms in different wings, offering them privacy and their own unique features. The first guest room and full bathroom come with a steam shower. The garden suite, off of the courtyard, has its private bath with a jet tub and toilet seat heaters. The master suite’s bathroom features a furo soaking tub with the most beautiful coastal views you can imagine. Each bedroom has split AC and features designs inspired by, and some coming directly from, Japanese temples.
Enjoy views across Laie Bay and down the lush coastline of green speckled mountaintops from the pool deck and from many rooms in the home. The pool is the perfect place for entertaining or relaxing and stargazing. It is surrounded by lava rock tiles whose design is inspired by Japanese moon viewing platforms of 1000 years ago. When the full moon is above, you can see the silver reflection in the pool, surrounded by coconut palms and hear the trickling water feature as you smell the ocean breeze. It doesn’t get much better than that.
Off the pool deck, there are stairs leading down towards the beach. Here you will find an extra studio/office space with a deck also overlooking Laie Bay. Take advantage of this office with a view as you work from home. From the steps you can cut away a path leading to the Muliwai, the stream that comes down the mountain to the beach directly in front of the house. Make your way down to the beach from here or explore the jungle below.
This unique home exhibits a yin and yang atmosphere with soft and hard elements including the concrete floor juxtaposed against bright walls and bamboo ceiling. The fully equipped kitchen is designed to include views of the ocean. Its open concept is inclusive so that you can continue conversations with guests in the dining and living area. Just off the kitchen is a meditation room or an extra bedroom; use it how you’d like.
Extreme precision and superb geometric lines inspire the design of this Laie home. View the video tour of the home here.
