Big Island of Hawaii – Waikoloa Village's "Scenic Point" History

Originally, a landmark literally meant a geographic feature used by explorers and others to find their way back or through an area.

In modern usage, a landmark includes anything that is easily recognizable, such as a monument, building, or other structure. In American English, it is the main term used to designate places that might be of interest to tourists due to notable physical features of historical significance. Do you recognize this one?

Waikoloa Village’s “scenic point”

Before Waikoloa Road, before Queen Kaahumanu Highway, passersby would gather at this familiar structure situated near the intersection of Waikoloa Road and Mamalahoa Highway. In 1971, Boise Cascade built the landmark in the shape of an old-fashioned canoe sail, representing the sky and the ocean.

From this vantage point, onlookers were indeed treated to a spectacular view of the ocean and the sky, from Kona to Kohala. Sadly, the steps to the platform and dedication plaque have deteriorated over the years, but the beauty remains for all to enjoy.
