Why Do Waikoloa Village Kids Stay Home on Sunday Afternoon?

There are multiple answers to this question…because of the “Fat Frog,” the “Schweddy Balls,” the “Orange Creamsicle,” or the “Hyper Stripe,” etc. Another simple way to put it would be to say, “the ice cream man’s in town!”

The yellow ice cream truck can be seen and heard in Waikoloa Village every Sunday

Wherever the ice cream man goes he has to be in his truck coated with bright yellow paint and a funky sound system. Kids drop their bikes and start running, or stand up on the hill and give him a standing ovation. The ice cream man draws an excited crowd. Children and grownups line up on the Waikoloa Village streets on Sunday afternoon and order up ice cream and popsicles.

The truck sells about three dozen different ice cream novelties, plus 8-oz. cups of Waimea’s own Tropical Dreams Ice Cream. Every week, the yellow ice cream truck visits eager fans in Waimea, Kawaihae, Waikoloa Village, and sometimes Puako.

Kids enjoy seeing/hearing the yellow ice cream truck after 11am every Sunday in Waikoloa Village. Everybody would have to agree that kids could buy ice cream at the supermarket, but it is not the same! It’s a retro thing and the kids get excited.

The company slogan, “Serving up Smiles Once Ice Cream at a Time” is emblazoned across the back of the truck. Sometimes it’s the little things people do that make the biggest impact. As grownups, they will remember buying ice cream from the ice cream man.
