Unique Maui Home Offers Opportunity to Own a Piece of Hawaiian History

A rare and unique home recently came on the market in Wailuku that offers a piece of history, both from a spiritual and cultural perspective. The Waikapu Stone Church House, a registered Hawaiian landmark, is now for sale. This church was originally built in 1855 and has been a sacred place of worship and a community center for Hawaiian language speakers. In the 1900’s, it served as a surgical unit during World War II to help wounded soldiers.

Renovations

In 1994, it was rebuilt and transformed while preserving some unique features including the two-story gothic windows, set in two feet thick lava and coral-lime mortar walls. Another renovation in 2007 added a covered outdoor dining space with a fireplace and hearth seating. The kitchen was upgraded with glass mosaic tile with inset pewter accents designed by Gayle Bright.

You can take advantage of the apple banana trees and pink grapefruit that grows on the property. The lush landscaping and bamboo panels also provide privacy between the main house and the two bedroom ohana, which was remodeled in 2004 and includes travertine flooring.
