The Perfect Day at Poipu Sands

Sunrise

There’s something magical about waking up at Poipu Sands. My perfect day would start at 6 am with a morning walk from the condo down the path to the cliffs at Shipwreck Beach. From there, you are on the Maha’ulepu Heritage Trail. It’s a 3.8-mile moderate hike that follows the coastline from Shipwrecks Beach to Punahoa Point. It offers stunning views of the Pacific Ocean, rugged cliffs, and diverse coastal landscapes, including sandy pathways and rocky outcrops. It’s quiet, calm, and the view of the sunrise over the ocean is nothing short of breathtaking. There’s no better way to start the day than with that golden light and the sound of waves crashing below.

After soaking in the sunrise, I make my way back to the condo for coffee and breakfast on the patio. From there, I can just sit, sip, and watch the ocean do its thing — it’s the kind of morning that fills you up with gratitude. Knowing me, I would have my computer out and sneak in a little work.

Daytime

After enjoying breakfast, I would head over to the Poipu Sands Tennis Court for a quick workout session. The tennis court is conveniently located just a short stroll from your front door. If you’re a fan of pickleball, you can take a slightly longer walk to the Poipu Kai Tennis Club, which features eight tennis courts along with additional courts for pickleball.

When lunch rolls around, I’ve got options. If I’m in the mood for something close, I’ll walk over to Little Fish Coffee or Kauai Poke for something light and local. Or, I’ll hop in the car and take the quick 5-minute drive to Koloa Town. The Fish Market and Living Foods are two of my go-to spots when I want something fresh and flavorful. The food trucks in Koloa Town are another great option if you are in the mood or Thai or Mexican food.

Afternoons are meant for adventure or relaxation — whatever the mood calls for. Sometimes I’ll walk down to the  beach to soak up the sun, and other times I’ll check out CJM Stables, just down the road, for a horseback ride with ocean views. It’s such a unique experience and adds a little extra magic to the day.

Evening

As the sun starts to set, it’s time for dinner — and there’s no better place than Stevenson’s Library at The Grand Hyatt when you’re on the south side of Kaua’i. It’s just a short walk from Poipu Sands – probably 3-5 minutes and hands down my favorite dinner spot. I go for the sushi — and then more sushi — because it’s that good. My drink order is usually a top shelf margarita rimmed with salt and Lihimui. My dessert order is the Matcha Tiramisu is a must try if you have a sweet tooth.
