Do you like to walk? I do, especially because I get to soak in the surrounding beauty of our island home.
Walking is a simple yet effective form of physical activity that offers numerous physical health benefits, but it also offers lots of mental health benefits. When you walk, your stress and anxiety are reduced and your mood and well-being are improved.
So, if you want to reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke, improve your circulation, burn some calories and increase your metabolism, plus improve your mood, go for a walk. And, if you are lucky enough to live on Oahu, you won’t lack for wonderful places to go and places to see while doing so.
Some great places to walk on Oahu include the following:
Diamond Head Crater Trail
A popular, paved trail with steep sections leading to incredible views of Waikiki.
Makapu’u Point Lighthouse Trail
A well-maintained trail with a moderate climb to a lighthouse overlooking the southeast coast.
Lanikai Pillbox Trail
Offers breathtaking views of Lanikai Beach and the Mokulua Islands.
Manoa Falls Trail
An easy hike to a beautiful waterfall, considered a good option for all levels.
Wiliwilinui Ridge Trail
A ridge hike in Hawaii Kai with great views, considered a good introduction to ridge hiking.
All these are great walking trails, but my favorite walks are usually those close to home. I love rising early in the morning and walking to the beach within minutes to my house. The soft, early morning light creates a beautiful golden hue, casting a warm glow on everything. There is just something about the soft light, fresh air and the tranquility of the world waking up that refreshes my soul.
Even if you don’t live on or near the beach, you won’t lack for accessible beach areas where you can kick off your shoes and stroll on the sand. And of course, there are countless trails and walking paths throughout the island. You might be surprised to learn that AllTrails lists 246 places to walk and hike on Oahu!
What are you waiting for? The exposure to sunlight and fresh air, and the physical exercise, will not only reduce your risk of chronic disease, it will enhance your mental and emotional well-being. And, it will also enhance your spiritual well-being.
When you connect with something larger than yourself, you will feel a sense of reverence and awe. You will taste something sacred and you will be rejuvenated, recharged, and spiritually renewed.
Whether your into beach walks on soft sand or hiking trails with inclines, you’ll love the diverse options Oahu has to offer. As you walk amidst beautiful landscapes like the ocean, volcanic rock formations, and lush greenery, you’ll be physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually stimulated. And best of all, you’ll have fun!
