Talk Story #22 – Aloha Spirit and King Kamehameha Day Celebrations on Oahu

The King Kamehameha statue on a typical sunny day in front of the Parliament Building, Honolulu

Hawaii is a land of cultural celebrations, parades, ceremonies, and family (ohana) activities! This year will be the 95th annual King Kamehameha Day, remembering the great King who unified the islands in 1810 and became the Kingdom of Hawaii’s first monarch. This special day was set in 1872 by his grandson, King Kamehameha V, and in turn, was one of the first holidays proclaimed in 1959 when Hawaii became the 50th state.

On Oahu in the historic capital area of Honolulu, the famous statue fronting Aliiolani Hale, across from the Iolani Palace, will be decorated with its annual lei draping. Check the photo result of the lei ceremony from a previous year and more details for the islands by clicking on the above link.

Starting in the city, the wonderful annual Floral Parade is one of Hawaii’s longest. Gorgeous flower decked floats, marching bands, pau riders (horsewomen wearing long colorful dresses) hitched up to accommodate riding their superb horses, and multitudes of musicians and hula dancers will once again wind their way toward Kalakaua Ave and into Waikiki, ending at the Kapiolani Park.

That is not all! At the park, the ‘Hoolaulea’ (celebration) continues! There will be live entertainment, food booths, cultural demonstrations, and more. If you are here on island, this event is not to be missed and will be long remembered. Hawaii television KFVE will air live Saturday, June 11 at 9 a.m. and again Sunday, June 19th at 5 p.m.

Along the route from Honolulu to Waikiki, owners in the nearby high rise condominiums enjoy this particular lifestyle of being where the “action” is. Perhaps the in-between district of “Kaka’ako” has the price range and the perfect opportunity for you.
