Sunsets reign Supreme on the Kohala “Gold” Coast

Hawaii is synonymous for many people with the word “sunset.” And here on the Big Island’s Kohala Coast, we understand why. This is a throw-down challenge to the other islands – I dare you to provide better sunsets to your visitors than those choosing the “path less traveled” on the Big Island’s leeward coast!

Granted, one of the reasons our sunsets are spectacular is due to the VOG – volcanic smog – that has emitted from Pele’s hale of creation nearly continuously for the past 20 years. (It certainly has nothing to do with the yummy mai tais many visitors and residents enjoy at the Seafood Bar in Kawaihae!) But at the end of the day, it’s hard to beat the cloud formations that liven up the skies, and reflect in the pools,  created by unique weather patterns on the beautiful Big Island. After all, we do have 12 of the world’s 14 climate zones,  two of the largest and biggest mountains in the world – Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, – and one of the largest and deepest ocean channels in the world between the Kohala Coast and Hale’akela on Maui, roughy 40 miles away.

These photos were all taken last week (July 17th, to be exact) by Carolyn Blake of Real Tours Hawaii, LLC, from the lanai of what I believe is the best house for the money on the entire Kohala “Gold” Coast. I am the lucky Broker representing Hawaii Life on the sale of this house, and there’s a small part of me that doesn’t really want it to sell… can you blame me?? This is where I go to “work” when I can’t be at home in Puako Beach for sunset on the Kohala Coast! Certainly,  every time I show this house to a prospective buyer during the day, I encourage them to come back to see it again at sunset! I’ll bring the pupus… you bring your checkbook.

Someday, I’ll publish a coffee-table book of all the sunset photos I took from the lanai of my house in a neighboring community during the first four years we lived on the Kohala Coast. And then maybe one of all the photos I take now at sunset in Puako Beach, 15 miles south. It’s not that I’m a such a great photographer, the sunsets are simply that good.
