Hana is a special place located in East Maui far from any other busy city. If you are looking to escape traffic and the fast-paced lifestyle many are accustomed to, Hana is the peaceful retreat you’re looking for. It takes two nights and three days of immersion into the food, Hana rain, the people, and exploring the tropical forests to get a taste of the true spirit of Hana.

The “Road to Hana” is an experience in its self. The windy road, sharp turns, dramatic ocean views, plummeting cliff sides, and spectacular waterfalls create an amazing journey. Along the way you can indulge in fresh fruit stands grown locally, warm fresh baked banana bread, and welcoming locals. The road to Hana is just the start of something magical.

Hana is a simple town with residential homes, private short-term rental properties, Travaasa Hotel, farmers, food trucks, and local historical stores like the Hansagawa General store (107-year-old family run business and considered one of the few family run businesses on Maui). The popular beaches are Hamoa. Koki beach, and Black Sand beach of Waianapanapa. Venus Pools and Oheo Gulch, where “The Seven Sacred Pools” are located, are my two favorite locations.

The welcoming people of Hana are truly the best part of the trip. One cannot truly appreciate and experience Hana without slowing down to wave at the locals or stopping to talk story with a farmer. You’ll hear of Oprah’s beautiful rock wall and how you should stop for Thai food at Pranee Food truck (in Hana town near the baseball diamond).

You’ll also be reminded to take a deep breath and appreciate the beauty. So many visitors rush through Hana without even stopping trying to complete their “Road to Hana” journey in a single day. I had the pleasure of recently attending the local Bon festival to revive the old historical Hana Hongwanji temple. The last Bon festival was 41 years prior! I was fortunate enough to have been showing property in town that weekend.

If you want to immerse yourself in the Hana lifestyle and consider a relocation, I have hiked most property options over 5 acres, with and without homes. The fresh fruit is dripping from the trees, flowers bursting with color, and the miracle berries are a must try! Miracle berries react with your taste buds turning a lime into a sweet piece of candy. You’ll also want to try one of the monstrous jackfruit, they really do taste like the Juicy Fruit gum in the yellow package. It’s amazing!
