South Maui Fish Company Food Truck Ranks High on Yelp.com

Mary Kerstulovich from Hawaii Life has ties to in The South Maui Fish Company. Her family owns the #1 rated food truck on Yelp.com, and I just had to try it for myself.

In the heart of Kihei, tucked back behind the marketplace and across the street from the ocean, is a gem for those looking for great fish on Maui. 22 Alahele Place in the parking lot behind the 76 gas station, is where you’ll find The South Maui Fish Company. Off the beaten path and right in the middle of tourist you’ll find an inviting space with smiles and seating… I approached what appears to be a typical food truck as you arrive – but different with a barbeque parked right out front! A friendly staff, cute tables, and background music created an inviting ambiance in the gravel courtyard. The menu is simple. Big on poke bowls, ceviche, tacos, and simple fish plates. The fish of the day was Marlin #24 and that changes day to day. Ahi, marlin, mahi, or opaka are some options the chef mentioned you might come across… and if it’s not caught off of Captain Hunters’ boat right of the Maui coast, they shop daily for the freshest fish options available.

When we stepped up to place my order I asked for the crowd-pleasers. Before you know it, there’s a chef on the barbecue and a short while later, out comes the tacos.  A super fresh, heaping, teri-pineapple, spicy, savory dream in a crispy shell. It’s a combination of nothing you’ve ever tasted before. The portions are generous and a good value at $13. The 2^nd serving was a nice serving of ahi poke that was melt-in-your-mouth delicious. Spicy with a kick, just like we like it – and the shoyu / furikake mix is so ‘ono’ it’ll keep you coming back here for more.

This is fish prepared as fresh as it gets… a place to treat your friends and family. The high reviews on Yelp.com are no surprise, and I even noticed positive commentary on the renowned Zagat.com. Family owned and operated, this sustainable business is thriving from continuous support. Check it out next time you’re in town! You won’t be disappointed.
