Seniors Come in All Sizes

Are you a senior citizen? I am. But, what comes to mind when you think of the term “senior”? I know many seniors and believe me, we aren’t all alike. Nor are we all the same age.

First of all, anyone ranging in age from the mid-50s on up can be classified as a senior. You can become a member of AARP at 50. And senior citizen discounts at restaurants and stores are often available for anyone in their fifties. So, just as seniors vary in age, so do their wants and needs vary when it comes to housing. Here are some of the differences by age group.

Fifties

Most “seniors” in their fifties have a lot of years left in them. They don’t feel old because they aren’t. Many are still working and enjoying active lifestyles. They may still have older children living at home and they may also be caregivers to aging parents. They’re generally not ready to downsize, and in fact, may still be trading up. Space for entertaining, for young adult children, and even for mom and dad can be criteria for younger seniors looking for a home.

Sixties

Seniors well into their sixties may be more focused on downsizing or looking for their last hoorah in a forever home. They may be close to retirement and looking forward to a more flexible and carefree lifestyle. Convenience and quality are important, as is staying close to family and friends. The desire for more maintenance-free properties is something I often hear voiced by my senior clientele in this age group.

Seventies

For those seniors over 70, retirement homes might be top of mind. Easy access to transportation and medical care are key. Many of my clients in this age group are on fixed incomes, so affordability is likely a factor. The days of caring for a large home are over, and smaller, more easily maintained properties are a common go-to.

Every Client Is Unique

Whatever your age, you have your own set of unique circumstances and desires. Seniors are not “one size fits all” and neither are the homes they choose to buy. Recognizing that not every “senior” is the same is just one of the many reasons why I love helping my senior clients!
