Moving is a stressful event all by itself. Now factor in getting your pets to Hawaii and you have additional things to worry about. Let’s face it, our pets are part of our families and their wellbeing is just as important as the rest of the family. You factor in cars, clothes, furniture, family, and pets when moving to Hawaii and you end up with lots of moving parts.
Make sure you allow plenty of time to prepare your pet for the move to Hawaii
The State of Hawaii has some very strict rules with rabies, blood tests, quarantine, direct release, and notarized forms. The one thing you need is time prior to moving to get all this accomplished. When we moved to Hawaii, I came out first for business reasons, and my wife, two teenage boys, and three dogs were all left in Colorado to get everything ready. The single biggest issue was the three dogs and not wanting them to be left in the Hawaii quarantine facility. The facility is open air, has limited visitation times, and the pets are separated. This was simply something our family would not allow for our fur babies.
The vet we used seemed knowledgeable about the process, but in the end, was really not. We ended up waiting an additional month in Colorado before the dogs were cleared for direct release.
At the end of the day, with all we had going on, we ended up hiring a service that specializes in moving pets to Hawaii. They helped with paperwork, spoke with the vet, watched the timelines, and coordinated the flights. They picked the dogs up from the airport all together and delivered them directly to the house in Hawaii. The cost was obviously more than if we had done this on our own, but the peace of mind we received was priceless.
The pups were fine, happy, and looked perfect when brought to the house. They were running in the yard and adjusted to Hawaii in minutes.
