Elaborating on my last blog touting how primely poised Poipu is for photovoltaic (PV) systems, solar is only one of the eco-minded ways Poipu real estate is embracing the green living trend. In fact, many of the south shore communities are creatively engaging in environmentally conscious ventures.
Kukui’ula
Once vast tracts of growing pineapples, Kukui’ula is now Kauai’s premier “down-to-earth paradise, a private club with an open Hawaiian heart.” This luxury development emphasizes a green living philosophy exemplified by the on-property Upcountry Farm, a lifestyle amenity where members are able to personally harvest a bountiful variety of fresh tropical fruits and vegetables, or have a satisfying farm-to-table meal prepared for them at the Plantation House.
“Life at Kukuiula is rooted in the down-to-earth paradise that is our community farm and garden. Tucked in a valley beside a 20-acre lake, the farm is a revelation in red earth.” – words and image courtesy of Kukui’ula
Another way Kukui’ula promotes eco-mindedness is in their plantation, yet contemporary design style architecture. Launching soon are their new parcel U/AA homes, featuring the strategic eco-architectural design influenced by the Hawaiian firm, Stephen Green Architecture. According to a recent press statement by Kukui’ula, the homes emphasis include “sustainable designs reflecting the highest degree of creativity, eloquence, and invention combined with a sense of pragmatism and lifestyle utilization.”
Poipu Beach Estates
Another eco-inventive community on the south shore is Poipu Beach Estates, a new, well-located development only blocks away from both Poipu Beach and the Shops at Kukui’ula. Using Grove Farm’s irrigation for landscaping, the subdivision also operates a water retention system to protect surrounding streams and the ocean from runoff. There is also a recycling and green waste composting area for owners.
Poipu Beach Estates Lot #186 (MLS# 269966)
Currently, my favorite lot in Poipu Beach Estates is #186. With a land area of 1.01 ac, this large parcel allows for a main residence, an additional dwelling unit (ADU), and a possible CPR.
Poipu Kai
Last but not least is the lovely Poipu Kai community. Poipu Kai Association members enjoy the ease of green living, with recyclables picked up by golf carts twice a week. Meandering paths through grassy green spaces that access the pools, tennis, and choice Poipu beaches never cease to remind the owner or visitor that it is all about enjoying nature with your loved ones.

With coveted Greenbelt frontage and tasteful renovations, 2226 Loke Road in the desirable neighborhood of Bayview at Poipu Kai is the only residence currently on the market. This private resort-like sky-lit vacation rental is a great choice for an owner to enjoy this natural island conscientiously.
