Plan Now for PGA’s Tournament of Champions in Kapalua, Maui (Jan. 3-7, 2013)

Set to run January 3rd – January 7th, 2013, Maui is extremely fortunate to have such a high caliber sporting event taking place here every year. It has been sponsored by different companies in the past, this year the primary sponsor is Hyundai. You will see the tournament also referred to this year as the “Hyundai Tournament of Champions.” 

2013 Hyundai Tournament of Champions Details and Information

• When: January 3-7, 2013
• Where: Plantation Golf Course in Kapalua, Maui
• Cost: $15/day, but there are also weekly tickets available (See link at bottom for more information)

This PGA event, annual tournament of champions, will be televised and is to be held in Kapalua, Maui at the Plantation Golf Course. For any of you who may not be a hardcore golfer, let me briefly explain the tournament, which is different than most golf tournaments.

2013 Hyundai Tournament of Champions

This is the first PGA tournament of the year and will have between 28-34 of the top PGA players in attendance. It is called the tournament of champions because a player must have won a PGA event during the past year to get the chance to participate.

This is not a tournament where you have over 100 players who may or may not make the cut to make it to the final round. In this event the same players play all 4 days of competition to the end. This year it will be a Friday, Saturday, Sunday with a Monday finish.

In addition to the 4 days of competition, there are 2 days of practice rounds prior to the tournament (Jan 1-2, 2013) and 1 day, Thursday, January 3rd, is a Pro-Am (professional-amateur) competition, for a full week of entertainment. In addition to the golf, there are many other events taking place all around.

When is the Best Time to Meet the PGA Players?

Now for the best part. Since Maui is a much smaller place than many other places that tournaments take place, you can meet one-on-one with many of the players on the course. The best day to meet, talk, and get pictures taken with the players is on the Pro-Am day, that will be on Thursday.

The players are not as focused as they will be for the competition play, since there is big money on the line. They are really much more relaxed and have the time to stop, say hi, and let you get some pictures.

The PGA does not allow cameras on course on the 4 competition days. As for the amateurs, who knows who may be there, but I have often seen many celebrities around. If you are serious about getting some autographs or pictures, come on the Pro Am day and pick a hole that is not near the clubhouse or entrances, get yourself a little out of the way, and you will have a great time.
