The winter swells are hitting the North Shores of the Hawaiian islands. Oahu is where the World Surfing Professional Tour started and ends every year. The North Shore has been called the 7 Mile Miracle for the best surf on earth in 7 consecutive miles. For those who are new to the sport and want a little history of how it’s changed the world, please read on.
Origins of Surfing
In the early 1800s, surfing had been for only Hawaiian royalty known as Ali’i. By the early 1900s, Duke Kahanamoku and a handful of friends went around the world sharing the sport of surfing with Australia, and the East and West coasts of the U.S. Duke won several gold medals swimming in the ’40s Olympics. One of these friends was family to me, Liko Vida who both left their surfboards on the East Coast rather than bring them back to the islands. They are in the Smithsonian Museum today and rarely brought out to the public. Neither would have guessed that the sport of surfing would be an international sport and in the 2020 Olympics held in Japan this summer.
