Waimea (Kamuela) Town Meeting This Thursday (Oct. 20) on Controlling Coqui Frogs

Waimea is known for its beautiful green hills and its peaceful rural life amidst the people, horses, cattle, lambs, and goats that roam those hills, but that peace could be shattered soon, as Coqui frogs are reported to have started to invade Waimea!

Meeting—Controlling Coqui—Thursday at 6 p.m. at Tutu’s house

This is going to be an important meeting as this problem is just starting in Waimea. I plan to be there, as I want to hear firsthand about the problem and where we are today. Big Island Invasive Species Committee members will be meeting Thursday in Waimea at Tutu’s house at 6p.m. to discuss what strategies can be used to prevent colonies from becoming established in Waimea. 

Efforts include building a network of neighborhood community groups to monitor, catch, and treat coqui. Kim will share her experience with prevention and eradication efforts that have proven successful in North Kohala.

If you live in Waimea and have the time on Thursday, you may want to stop by the meeting to hear what can be done now to stop the coqui. If not, I’ll be reporting back on what I hear at the meeting on how we can keep Waimea the quiet, peaceful town it is today.
