Mauna Lani Resort, Kohala Coast, Big Island, Hawaii
One of my favorite things about the Mauna Lani Resort is called Twilight at Kalahuipua’a – Talk Story Under a Full Moon. Each month, on the Saturday closest to when the full moon rises, Mauna Lani residents and guests are invited to attend an evening of Hawaiian storytelling and entertainment on the oceanfront lawn that fronts the historic Eva Parker Woods cottage.

This special evening is hosted by Danny Akaka, a local celebrity of sorts, who has dedicated his life to perpetuating Hawaiian tradition and sharing Hawaii’s unique blend of respect, graciousness, and power through storytelling, hula, education, and chant. Danny is from an influential family as the son of recently retired Hawaii senator Daniel Akaka.
Danny believes that the area around the Mauna Lani Resort is the piko, or center, of physical and spiritual healing on the Big Island. Personally, I love that the program for Full Moon Talk Story is kept a secret. You never know what you’re going to get until you arrive: hula, stories of old, traditions, chanting, local plant and wildlife education…
