Mauna Kea Resort's Manta Restaurant Hosts Foxen Wine Dinner on the Big Island – Nov. 12, 2011
California’s Central Coast has a lot in common with the Big Island (and I’m not just talking about the laid-back attitude and surf).
Sometime in 1992 or 1993, my husband and I decided to go wine tasting in the central coast and (what felt like) stumbled upon Foxen Winery. We didn’t know a lot about wine then, but we did know that their Pinot Noir was incredible, and it’s only gotten better for Foxen—and all its wines—since.
Mauna Kea Resort’s Manta Restaurant hosts the California Central Coast’s Foxen Winery next week
This Foxen tasting looks incredible. Organic chicken foie gras sausage, are you kidding me? Yummm! And quail and quail eggs from Maunalulu Farm in Honoka’a. One of the farm owners came by the Hawaii Life booth at the North Kohala Country Fair to talk story with us; their operation is all organic, free-range, and brilliant.
The last wine tasting at the Mauna Kea Resort’s Manta Restaurant was Grigich Hills. I actually didn’t go, as that afternoon in Kona I was awarded Broker of the Year by the West Hawaii Association of Realtors, and—ahem—wound up in Kona longer than intended. (It was quite an honor.)
The two Pinot Noirs being tasted this weekend almost make me want to cancel my trip to California to attend the Leaders in Luxury Conference in Laguna Beach. Almost. If you go, enjoy! And please report back, it’s sure to be a tasty evening…

@Katie I was thrilled when I saw that Foxen was coming to Manta and the Big Island. In my past life, prior to being a realtor here on the Big Island I used to live in Santa Barbara and owned a bakery there, D’Angelo Bread. The bakery was (and still is) famous for its sourdough bread. The starter came from the wild wine yeasts captured at Foxen Vineyard during their 1992 crush. . We got to know Dick Dore, one of the “Foxen Boys” who will be here on the Big Island. I cant wait to drink the wine, eat the food and catch up with one of the wildest winemakers in Santa Barabara. As the saying goes the Big Island is a Small World. and the best people end up here sooner or later your self Miss Broker of the Year included. BTW you will be missed but Ill save you a bottle.

George Gomes at Mantas was featured on Sam Choy’s television program during which he featured an Ahi tuna appetizer with cucumbers, mustard ice cream and vanilla vapors. Someone please try it and tell me if it is as good as it looks.

@Diane – I didn’t know Sam Choy has his own show! Coolio! I met him on a Hawaiian Airlines flight to Oahu a few months ago, was fun to talk story with such a great chef!
