Kona Style – Architect Lucky Bennett Homes For Sale

Since the late 50’s, many of the most distinctive and stylish homes here in Kona were designed by the architect Lucky Bennett. Lucky Bennett homes are unmistakable. His homes are designed to capture sunsets and ocean breezes first and foremost. Rooms angle in unexpected ways, walls disappear, openings frame views like the one below.

There are two great examples on the market right now; one priced at $1.1 million (MLS# 242309) and another at a mere $130,000 (MLS# 240571). As you can see, there is a Lucky house for every budget. Two more homes of his design just recently went into contract with two “lucky buyers.”

One was Lucky’s own home (MLS# 215277), easily the most asked about home in my career as a Kona real estate agent. Take a look and you will see why. Another is also a lovely example of his style (MLS# 240691). Lucky homes go fast!

The Alii Drive home (MLS# 242309) priced at $1.1 million is stunning. The pictures just don’t do it justice. On the mauka side of the street the home is designed to capture ocean views while screening views of the other homes and Alii Drive.

Waterfalls and bubbling koi ponds mask any traffic noise. Built in 1961, this home features the best of Lucky: open rooms, ocean views, marvelous use of tropical woods, and an Asian flare. The use of Koa throughout the house, especially the kitchen, is another trademark Lucky touch.

The little coffee farm located in Captain Cook (MLS# 240571) and priced at $130,000 is a sweet getaway with all the Lucky touches albeit on a small and simple scale. The home is built of reclaimed redwood, the rooms open to the outside and the amazing view of the South Kona coast.

Perhaps the best feature there, and rare for Kona, is a fireplace with a sunken living room. Does it get cooler than that? Speaking of nice touches, there is even a little bath house set amongst the coffee trees.

So, if you are looking for a one-of-a-kind home here in Kona, make sure and ask if there are any of Lucky’s houses on the market in your price range.

Awesome blog, Erik!! I love Lucky-style homes, so distinctive, and of course, copied (not as well) far and wide on the Big Island… but nothing is ever as good as the original!

Thanks Katie, Visually I love these homes but when showing them I try to get buyers to linger for a time as these homes breathe. Lucky designs them around Kona’s gentle mauka makai breezes. Since we don’t have regular trade winds here in Kona this can be extremely important. Only a local architect gets that and Lucky surely does. Think what you want about the look of his homes, no homes are more comfortable to live in.

Hey Pat,
Yeah it is an amazing price. It is leasehold so currently that means cash only, no banks loan on leasehold but it has a 30 plus year lease. I showed it to some hipster friends from San Francisco who are trying to figure out a way to swing it.

My daughter just sent me this web site,. I wasn’t aware of it till now.
I want to thank everyone who commented and let them know they are most appreciated. I’m 3 years late with this acknowledgement, but as they say, better late than never.
To those that still remember me I’m Baaack. I’ve started the design work on a house for Hokulia and look forward to having the opportunity to create many more authentic “Lucky” houses in the years to come.
