Local Students Volunteer to Care for the Cultural and Preservation Land at Hokulia on Hawaii Island
What comes to mind when you think about giving back to your local community? “Giving back” can be defined in many ways. It can be as simple as signing up to volunteer or it can be as meaningful as hosting a fundraiser for a charitable need. But, for this group of students giving back was in the power of lending a helping hand with physical hard work.
Huaka’i to Hokulia’s Park & Cultural Sites
Hokulia’s Park and Cultural Sites Association recently hosted a “Huaka’i,” otherwise known as a field trip for local students on the Big Island of Hawai’i.
Hokulia’s Keʻekeʻe Preserve
The Huaka’i took place at Hokulia’s Keʻekeʻe Preserve for students in grade 11 and 12 from school Ke Kula O ʻEhunuikaimalino. Ke Kula O ʻEhunuikaimalino is located in Captain Cook, on the Big Island of Hawaii.
Lending a Helping Hand
The students helped to prepare the preserve for future agricultural projects by clearing the landscape for planting and introducing cover crops to improve soil health. The best part of the field trip was that the students worked hard and had a great time while giving back to the local community.
