One of the big draws with living in Haiku is windsurfing and surfing on Maui’s North Shore
Hookipa Beach Park is renowned for some of the best windsurfing and surfing spots in the world. We already have had two major North Shore swells. I was stoked to get a couple of morning and surf outer reef at Kanaha Beach.
- Ho’okipa Beach Park: A world-famous windsurfing and surfing destination, locals, and waterman from Europe, Japan, Brazil gather to windsurf and surf epic days of surf at Hookipa. We all ready had two major swells. My family sons, and granddaughters are regulars surfing Hookipa.
- Pe‘ahi (Jaws): One of the world’s largest waves, a big-wave surfing mecca. In the beginning you had Laird Hamilton and his tow crew ruling the waves unitl the paddle crews busted out their 10 ft guns and paddled into some of the biggest waves in the world. On the windy days world class windsurfers like Marcilio Browne are taking windsurfing to another level at Jaws.
The North Shore of Maui offers consistent trade winds, making it ideal for wind foiling and kite surfing, which is a new rage. I myself am an average windsurfer, but I do like to get out at Kanaha when I can. There is a regular crew at Kanaha that are there pretty much there every day there is wind. Also, visitors from around the world love experiencing the wind and waves at Kanaha Beach Park.
Haiku is known for hiking, yoga retreats, great choices in gyms to get a work out, and organic gardening. Or just sitting on your lanai enjoying the perfect weather. Haiku is not to hot, and yet not to cold. I find it to be the perfect conditions to call home.
The lush environment and serene atmosphere contribute to a lifestyle centered around nature and wellness:
- Hiking and waterfalls: Explore nearby trails like the Bamboo Forest and Makapipi Water Falls.
- Yoga and wellness retreats: Haiku has a wellness-centered community with yoga studios and retreats, offering holistic living lifestyle
- Farming and sustainability: The area is home to many organic farms, reflecting a culture of sustainable living. On our Haiku property we find that you can grow and number of different kids of fruit trees and organic vegetables. We have raised pigs, even though they are pets, chickens for fresh eggs, and a couple of horses that belong to my daughter.

Buying real estate in Haiku, Maui can be a rewarding experience, especially for those who value a peaceful, rural lifestyle with a close connection to nature. Haiku offers a unique real estate market that caters to a variety of buyers, from those seeking life in the country, to luxury estates. Here’s a detailed guide to buying real estate in Haiku, along with key considerations and trends.
Types of Properties in Haiku
- Residential homes: Most homes in Haiku are single-family residences. They range from modest plantation-style homes to larger, custom-built estates with expansive grounds.
- Many properties are designed with sustainability in mind, featuring solar power, rainwater catchment systems, and large gardens for growing food.
- High-end luxury properties that often feature ocean views, large acreage, and luxury amenities such as pools, guesthouses, and private orchards.
- Haiku vacant land also has many opportunities for buyers looking to build their own homes, with large plots of vacant land available for development. I have built three of my own homes over the years.
Market Trends and Prices
- Home prices: The cost of homes in Haiku varies widely depending on size, location, and amenities. As of 2023, homes generally range from around $800,000 for smaller properties to over $3 million for luxury estates and up.
- Land prices: Vacant land in Haiku can be expensive due to its desirable location and large lot sizes. Prices typically range from $400,000 to over $1 million, depending on acreage and proximity to the ocean.
- Appreciation: The Haiku real estate market has seen steady growth over the past several years, driven by increased interest in rural living and sustainable lifestyles.
Key Considerations for Buyers
- Rural vs. suburban living: Haiku offers a more rural and secluded lifestyle compared to other areas of Maui like Kihei or Lahaina. Buyers need to be prepared for this slower pace of life.
- Off-grid homes: Many properties in Haiku are off-grid, meaning they rely on alternative energy sources like solar panels and water catchment systems. Buyers should consider if they are comfortable with these systems or prefer traditional utilities. While Haiku is close to natural attractions like waterfalls and surf spots, it is more remote in terms of grocery stores, schools, and healthcare. Paia and Makawao, nearby towns, offer more amenities.
*It’s essential to work with a local realtor who understands the unique real estate market in Haiku. They can provide insights into the area, help navigate the local zoning laws, and connect buyers with properties that meet their needs.
- Navigating the market: The Haiku market can be competitive, especially for properties with ocean views or large acreages, so having a realtor with local connections can give buyers an edge.
Living on Maui’s North Shore is a special place to call home. I love driving out of Paia, past Mama’s Fish House, past Hookipa Beach checking the surf. As you enter Haiku, there is something Magical about Haiku lifestyle and calling Haiku home.
