When you are on Maui, all roads eventually lead to North Shore Maui. It really is a focal point of the island that Maui visitors travel to. The questions is why?
1. Road to Hana
Well, everyone at least once in their visit to Maui will drive to Hana, and Paia is a perfect pit stop for breakfast, pick up or to pick some grinds for the trip to Hana.
2. Jaws
I would say in the winter visitors always ask “Where is Jaws?” Jaws is Maui’s answer to the world of big wave surfing, it can bring up to 70 ft waves and lures many big waves riders and spectators. The problem is it’s not an easy road, could be worth the walk if you are in shape and prepared with water and good shoes, 4-wheel drive is the way to go on the old pineapple fields roads. When the waves are pumping, it really is one of the seven wonders of Hawaii.
3. North Shore Vibe
One reason people visit the North Shore of Maui is it’s just a cool place. It’s where I have raised my family and have called home for the last 49 years. You really have a mix of people that’s diverse from the rest of the island. You have artists, surfers, windsurfers, kiters, watermen and women from around the world enjoying the ocean on the North Shore. Let’s not forget locals, hippies, musicians, actors, shell pickers and beach lovers.
4. Dining on Maui’s North Shore
There are some great places to eat from like the world-famous oceanfront restaurant Mama’s Fish House (you better book ahead of time). Nuka’s in Haiku is an island favorite for sushi. Collen’s in Haiku is a great place for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Paia Fish Market is a crowd favorite, Flatbread Pizza in Paia (love their pizza!). Ok, there are many other great places to eat, but one of my favorites is Café Des Amis, Mediterranean/French/Indian food, as they we say, “Ono delicious!”
5. Beautiful Beaches
There are many beautiful beaches like Hookipa Beach Park. On any given day you will find kids out ripping in the surf, pro-surfers, regular surfers, old guys who are still surfing (it’s my home break) and charging windsurfers, the best in the world putting on amazing performances. Another beautiful beach is Baldwin Beach, love morning walks on the beach.
6. Paia Town
Paia town is a favorite to cruise through. It was once an old plantation town, gone are the days of old mom and pop stores, but there is something for everyone with super cool boutique stores. Make sure you stop by Keani Hawaii store, she has impressive jewelry designs and clothing, and she is my daughter-in law!
Below you can view homes for sale in Spreckelsville, Paia, Kuau, and Haiku. There are a number of homes located on Stable Road (Sprecklesville). Living on Stable Road offers launching from the beach to get out and enjoy some windsurfing, on Maui’s most perfect windsurfing and kiting beaches. Kanaha Beach is just down the road for windsurfing and foiling, it’s my favorite spot to windsurf. Sugar Cove offers oceanfront condominiums that sits right on the beach. Once in a while you might see Spreckelsville oceanfront homes come on the market, this is the picture-perfect stretch of coast-line for enjoying living in a beach community. You also have Spreckelsville Country Club, offering 9-hole golf course, tennis, pool and a great restaurant for members.
Haiku Maui is located on the Northshore of Maui. You will find Haiku homes in the 2+ acres, from Plantation designs, to contemporary luxury homes in Haiku community. Over the years I have built three homes, and two cottages in Haiku with my wife. There is a lot to consider when you’re looking at building a home starting with finding the perfect piece of land, county permits, and location. I was a licensed contractor on Maui prior to real estate for 16 years, so feel free to call me with any questions you may have about living on the Northshore.
