LEED certified building becoming popular on the Big Island.

LEED stands for “Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design”…and it’s the latest certification in offering environmentally conscious products and services…I’m finding that more and more buyers are searching for LEED certified builders and green-friendly services!
“The Green Building movement offers an unprecedented opportunity to respond to the most important challenges of our time, including global climate change, dependence on non-sustainable and expensive sources of energy, and threats to human health,†said Rick Fedrizzi, president, chief executive officer, and founding chair of the U.S. Green Building Council.
More buyers are searching for builders and contractors based on this green design and construction criteria that promote a whole-building approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in key areas, including a sustainable site, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality, locations and linkages, awareness and education, curriculum integration, innovation in design, and regional priority.

Even our own West Hawaii Civic Center was LEED built for the future! For a building to achieve the LEED certified level, its construction must meet criteria in specific performance standards. Upon the building’s completion the USGBC will appoint an independent party to ensure it meets the performance standards. We have many Hawaii farms that are completely off-the-grid when it comes to energy, and now the latest technology can also make farms and homes more efficient by recycling its own energy, conserving water, and utilizing more natural light in buildings…
Buyers are looking for more energy efficient homes
So, I will be researching more LEED builders as we progress…Mother Earth will appreciate us for this!

Great blog, Claire! Go green… I don’t know if you heard but the Kona-Kohala Grand Green Homes Tour has been approved by the Boards of the Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce and the West Hawaii Mediation Center. So on May 1st, 2011 we will be able to tour homes with our clients in conjonction with Earth day in Kona, Kohala and Waimea that feature numerous sustainable features. A fun way to educate people about building, landscaping, decorating techniques that are earth-friendly. It will showcase local “green” businesses that provide environmentally sustainable services and products. May be I will see you then!

Aloha Ladies! Thank you for the comments! ..and Mahalo Catherine for the information about the Chamber of Commerce Sustainable Home tour on May 1st.. I would love to attend, what a great idea! I’m surprised the West Hawaii Association of Realtors hasn’t offered a tour like this yet..lol..maybe with this community awareness of eco-living we could also ask MLS to add a LEED or Sustainable Energy Field too so we can search properties that have these earth-friendly features! Wouldn’t that be nice! Mahalo for the info Hawaii Lifers! We can do anything together.. especially for the good of all! c:*

Me and Jack were looking at purchasing several solar power systems for our house this past year. The only issue was the amount. The most affordable system we found was about 10 thousand bucks. It could have taken us years to make back that amount. Anyways, we stumbled across these guidelines for creating your own solar panels. We chose to try out that way. It saved us a great deal of money, and the no cost, eco-friendly electricity is fantastic! 🙂 We operate a number of of our home appliances off this grid.
