Keahou Real Estate – From Japanese Shrines to Mid-Century Modern

Nestled on the slopes overlooking Keauhou Bay is an enclave of mid-century homes known as Kona Sunshine.  Hands down my favorite neighborhood on the Kona Coast for architecture. Most of the homes were built back in the 60’s, when known as Kona’s “Beverly Hills.” No two homes are alike. A modern take on a Japanese shrine sits next to a Jetson’s Fantasy sits nexts to a minimalist study. All the homes are surrounded by lush tropical landscaping, at at nearly 50 years of age, many of the palms and other trees are glorious. And, to top it off, all of this comes with spectacular bay, ocean and coastline views.

Currently there is a beautiful home (MLS# 230758) designed by a local architect, John Parazette, back in 1971. Being local, he knew how to take advantage of the views and tradewinds by incorporating walls of windows and open beam ceilings. The home is classic mid-century with slate floors, limed wood paneling, and a lava rock fireplace. (How much fun would it be to collect furniture for a house like this?) Outside is a half acre of lush tropical landscaping which features a huge monkey pod tree. And of course, there’s a spacious lanai off the great room and master suites for those sunset mai tais.
