Kauai’s Coffee Culture: Trilogy, Wishing Well, and The Haven

My morning routine has always been a cup or two of coffee followed by my favorite walk on the bay.

Mornings– Either we dread them or we love them. I myself, am known for waking early, before the sun and before the chickens have woken with a rustle. I have carried this with me for over three decades, with the companionship of a warm cup of black coffee!

There is no denying my fondness of a good coffee, and luckily Kauai has some exceptional coffee shops!

It’s the kind of place where you feel at home, savoring something real and pure.

Growing Coffee On Kauai

Growing coffee on Kauai can be a rewarding process due to the island’s ideal climate and soil. Here’s a deeper look: Kauai Coffee primarily grows the Arabica variety, which thrives in Kauai’s tropical climate.

Find the Right Location

Altitude: Coffee grows best at elevations between 1,500 and 6,000 feet above sea level, though lower elevations can work in a warm, tropical climate like Kauai’s.
Soil: Kauai’s rich, volcanic soil is ideal, but ensure it’s well-draining. Coffee plants need soil with good moisture retention but not waterlogged.
Sunlight: Coffee plants prefer filtered sunlight or partial shade. If planting in full sun, consider intercropping with taller trees to provide shade.

Planting

Spacing: Coffee plants should be spaced 5 to 8 feet apart, allowing for airflow and sunlight penetration.

Watering

Water Regularly: Coffee plants need consistent moisture, especially during the flowering and fruiting stages. Water deeply but allow the soil to dry out slightly between watering.

Harvesting

Coffee cherries will take 3-4 years to begin producing fruit after planting.
Picking Coffee cherries are ready to harvest when they turn bright red. Hand-pick the cherries carefully to avoid damaging the plant.

Processing

After harvesting, coffee cherries need to be processed to remove the beans.
Wet Processing: Soak the cherries in water to remove the outer pulp.
Dry Processing: Spread the beans to dry in the sun for 10-14 days.
After drying, the beans need to be hulled, roasted, and ground before they are ready for brewing.

Enjoy the Fruits of Your Labor

Kauai-grown coffee is known for its smooth, mild flavor with nutty and fruity undertones. Once you’ve processed your beans, enjoy brewing your home-grown Kauai coffee!

Growing coffee on Kauai is more than just agriculture—it’s an experience that connects you with the island’s natural environment and rich agricultural heritage. If done correctly, you can enjoy years of quality, home-grown coffee right from your backyard!
