Kauai Humane Society – Upcoming Opportunities

Do you have a heart for animals? Did you know that here on the island of Kauai there are more dogs and cats than people? And unfortunately, many of them are without loving homes. Thankfully, the Kauai Humane Society is working hard to give those that are homeless a second (or in some cases, maybe a third, or fourth) chance at a good life. There are a few upcoming events and ways to get involved with this cause, even if you aren’t in a position to adopt a new pet.

Make a difference in the life of a pet in need today!

Free MASH (Mobile Animal Sterilization Hospital) Clinic – September 18th-23rd

Help spread the word! Be a responsible pet owner and help decrease the number of homeless pets. Take a Shelter Dog on a Field Trip

Whether you are visiting the island or live here and want to get your “dog fix,” taking a shelter dog on a field trip is a rewarding and worthwhile way to spend a day. You can pick up a gracious and wonderful dog between 11am-1pm Monday through Friday (return by 5:30pm), or between 10am-12pm Saturday and Monday (return by 3:30pm). If you are a resident of Kauai, you will be allowed two field trips before being asked to attend a volunteer orientation and learn more about ways to get involved with the Kauai Humane Society. Click here to find more guidelines and specifics.

Support the “Aloha Escort” Program

The Kauai Humane Society has established relationships with many animal shelters back on the mainland, who may have more opportunities for pets to be adopted into their forever homes. Sometimes animals who have lived at the shelter here for several months get snapped up right away when taken to a new place! If you have a trip back to the mainland planned, this is one way for you to make a huge difference in an animal’s life. Since 2012, when the partnerships began, over 3100 animals have been successfully re-homed on the mainland. Unfortunately, the cost of transporting each dog is $150, which in the past has been waived by Alaska Airlines, but is currently “on hold” while the company reviews this service. So even if you can’t take a dog back with you, you can support the program by donating money to pay for a pet’s transport. Click here to donate.

Mahalo for considering this great cause.  Aloha!

Thanks so much for posting this article!! So much more awareness needs to be promoted for these poor animals. We are the humans and we are the only species that can eliminate the needless suffering of ALL animals. Domestic animals have nervous systems meaning they feel pain, hunger, sorrow, ect, all human feelings, they just cant speak human language. Hawaii must do much, MUCH, more to address the homeless animal population. Beautiful attractions on all the island are plagued with cats that have been dumped there. They are sick, injured, and inbred with horrible defects. What a way to ruin a wonderful vacation by having to witness this suffering. Hawaii must form more animal rescue groups to TNR, promote adoption. We do it on the mainland. We go to mexico to do spay/neuter clinics. Vets need to donate their time. Wish I live there to help out. ?

> Thanks for your comments, LaRae! I completely agree that we need to be proactive in taking steps to decrease the homeless pet population. I am hoping to bring awareness so more people will feel empowered to help. I have also noticed many landlords do not allow pets here, which I think accounts for some of the pets currently at the shelter, but the feral cat problem is very sad and has a negative impact on native bird populations. Thanks for your efforts in Mexico!
