The Kauai Humane Society – Opportunities to Help Homeless Animals

According to the Kauai Humane Society, we have more dogs than people on our island of Kauai. Many of these dogs end up homeless or are surrendered to the Kauai Humane Society. It’s kind of a big problem, but we can all be part of the solution. The Kauai Humane Society is one of the organizations on Kauai that does their best to give these animals a second chance and care for them while they await their new “furever” homes.

Here are some of the ways they are helping our homeless pet population:

  • Field Trips – This program allows dogs residing at the shelter to get a break from kennel life. If you live locally or are visiting, you can show up between 11-1 Tuesday through Friday or 10-12 Monday or Saturday, fill out some paperwork, and take a pooch out for the day. There are many dog-friendly beaches and hikes where you can go for a fun day. Dogs need to be back home by 5pm and 3pm respectively. And while you are out, make sure your dog for the day is wearing one of the “Adopt Me” vests, which is also a goal of the program.
  • A.L.O.H.A. (Airlift Our Homeless Animals) Transfer Program With over 4,000 animals coming into the shelter in 2017 alone, there simply aren’t enough homes here on Kauai to takes all these animals in. The partnership program allows pets to be transported by air to various shelters on the mainland, where they can get adopted out easier. The program is not cheap, so donations help in a major way, as do willing volunteers to transport and provide logistical support.
  • Spay & Neuter Clinics – These clinics provide a low-cost, easy way for residents to help control the homeless pet population. The clinic is open Tuesdays and Thursdays, with same day surgery appointments. If you can’t afford the subsidized fee, there is an application for free services. This is where donations become super helpful.

In support of the Kauai Humane Society’s Mission, they are hosting their annual “Paws For Celebration” Gala and online auction this Saturday, September 22, 2018 at the Kauai Marriott Resort’s Main Ballroom. Click here for tickets. Even if you can’t make it to the Gala, you can still bid on auction items here.

Foodland is also offering a donation-matching program right now. When you shop at any Foodland on Kauai right now, you can donate up to $249, which will be MATCHED by the company. This is a great way to give your donation double the impact.

We would also like to give a shout out to Natural Pet store in Puhi. Every Thursday they help promote a “Pet of the Week” on Kong radio, and if you adopt the pet of the week they will give you a free gift from the store. The generous owners help supply our island with high-quality pet food and supplies. If you have pets, definitely check them out! 1596 Haleukana St, Lihue, HI 96766 / (808) 246-1738

Mahalo for helping our island’s homeless pets!

I live in Orange County California. I donated many carriers to your cause. I have a neighbor with a large dog crate that is airline approved she would like to donate it also. I have lost the contact number of the lady that came to pick up my donations. Can you help?
