Between Ala Moana and Honolulu Harbor lies Kaka’ako, recently gaining attention for the well-planned residential and retail projects that have been renovating and restoring this industrial Oahu neighborhood.

Among the highlights of the development in this community, the entire Ward Village is being thoughtfully redone, including the addition of the South Shore Market with a wide variety of local shops selling everything from boutique clothing to delicious meals. You’ll find friendly playgrounds, walking paths, and parks here, as well as a proposed rail station for the new rail line.

New housing has been under construction as well. An excellent example of this is Waihonua at Kewalo, built in 2014 – the epitome of contemporary design while still being mindful of island character. The glass facade is striking from the outside, reflecting the stunning blue skies, and affording magnificent ocean and mountain views from inside the 341 units.
Energy efficient low-E glass is just one of the purposeful details used in construction here. An on-site general manager and MALAMA advisors can also quickly assist residents with any concerns, or book a guest suite for your visitors at a very reasonable nightly rate. This allows you to have your friends and family close, but not too close!

There are one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and three-bedroom units available in the building, with several different layout options. Residence H, for example, is a two bed, two bath unit with 1,069 square feet. The master bathroom has a large closet and an ensuite bathroom with a double sink, and the kitchen boasts a convenient layout and is open to the large dining room/living room. There is a washer and dryer in the unit as well.

The Up-and-Coming Neighborhood of Kaka’ako
Waihonua at Kewalo is perfectly located in the heart of Kaka’ako, close to:
- Ward Centers
- Ala Moana Mall
- A weekly farmers’ market
- Magic Island
- Kaka’ako Waterfront Park
- Ala Moana Beach Park (with our own on-site surf racks to store your boards)
- Neil Blaisdell Center, home of the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra and Hawaii Opera Theater, as well as hosting many special concert, comedy, and celebrity events throughout the year
- A large movie theater with 3-D capabilities and bargain matinee prices – but the building has an in-house theater, so why not host your own screening!

Kaka’ako is an up-and-coming neighborhood, and I have a listing available in the beautiful Waihonua building now. Floor-to-ceiling windows with custom covering showcase the ocean view from this bright and well-laid out 2 bed/2 bath unit on the 39th floor. There is ample interior storage, and two parking stalls. Additionally, the building boasts amenities such as a pool, whirlpool, clubhouse lounge area, exercise room, private theater, and guest suites.

If you are considering this area, as many are, it is important to weigh whether looking at available properties would be better than having your move on hold until an unfinished building is completed. A recent blog of mine discusses just this topic. Instead of waiting on new construction, you could be moving into thriving Kaka’ako right now, getting settled as soon as possible, and also avoiding any potential interest rate increases that may be on the horizon.
