Have you ever seen an advertisement for an event and think, “I should really go to that,” and then time goes by and you don’t? Such is the case with the annual Big Island Chocolate Festival and myself since 2012.
Well, the time has come. I get to cross an item off of my bucket list, enjoy some amazing chocolate creations AND volunteer all at the same time. This weekend, my daughter Elissa and I will have the absolute pleasure of volunteering at the 12th Annual Big Island Chocolate Festival, taking place at the beautiful Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa. We’re so excited to be part of this incredible event that brings together chocolate lovers like us, local chefs, farmers, and artisans—all in celebration of Hawaii Island’s cacao industry.
The festival, happening April 10–12, 2025, promises to be a vibrant, flavor-filled experience. This year’s theme is “Cirque de Chocolate,” blending the whimsical magic of a circus with the indulgent charm of chocolate. We’re looking forward to immersing ourselves in all the fun, flavor, and community spirit that this event is known for.
Here’s an overview of what’s in store:
Thursday, April 10: Things kick off with an educational tour of the Original Hawaiian Chocolate Factory in Keauhou, where guests will get a behind-the-scenes look at how cacao is grown and transformed into chocolate.
Friday, April 11: The festival hosts an amazing lineup of farm seminars on cacao fermentation, pest management, sustainable farming, and more—perfect for those who want to dig deeper into the world of chocolate from a grower’s perspective.
Saturday, April 12: This is the big day! A series of chef demonstrations and tastings will showcase chocolate-inspired culinary creations. The highlight of the weekend is the “Cirque de Chocolate” gala fundraiser, where we’ll be volunteering. The evening will be filled with spectacular performances, sweet and savory tastings, and a silent auction—all supporting local culinary programs and cacao education.
Elissa and I will be helping with event logistics and guest check-in during the gala. We’re excited to play a small part in such a joyful and delicious event—and even more excited to share this experience together.
If you’re on the Big Island or planning a visit, we’d love to see you there! It’s a wonderful way to support local talent, learn more about sustainable chocolate production, and of course, indulge your sweet tooth.
