Reflecting After 10 Years on the Big Island
I was recently hosting an open house when someone said, “Hawaii is my happy place.” That simple comment struck a chord with me because, before moving here, I used to feel exactly the same way.
Whenever I had a tough day at work or felt overwhelmed by life, my mind would naturally drift to the magical moments I’d spent on the Big Island. I’d picture myself lounging on white sand beaches, feeling the warm sun on my skin, and listening to the gentle breezes whispering through the trees. Just imagining it was enough to make the stress melt away. Even just imagining those peaceful days always brought me back to my happy place—Hawaii.
After living here for 10 years, I’ve often reflected on whether the Big Island is still my happy place. Has the magic faded? Has the rhythm of everyday life here changed my perspective? The answer: absolutely not. If anything, my love for this island has only deepened over the years.
Here are my top five reasons why the Big Island continues to be my happy place:
Peace and Quiet
The island offers a sense of tranquility that’s almost impossible to find elsewhere. After a long day at work, I can count on coming home to peace and quiet, where the stresses of the day simply fade
Nature takes center stage here, with its own soothing soundtrack. Mornings begin with the melodies of birds, evenings are filled with the gentle chirping of coqui frogs, and the day ends with the calming sounds of waves and soft breezes as the sun sets. This natural rhythm is a daily reminder of the island’s power to restore the soul.
Safety
I never take for granted the comfort of feeling safe in my surroundings. Some days, after watching the news, it feels like the world is spinning out of control.
But the Big Island provides a unique sense of security that I deeply value. While we still lock our doors and remain mindful of our surroundings, there’s something about the slower pace, the absence of big-city chaos, and the quieter atmosphere that wraps you in a comforting sense of safety. It feels like being tucked into a warm blanket of peace and calm.
Friends and Community
One of the most rewarding aspects of living here is the people. I can’t say enough about how Hawaii seems to bring out the best in everyone. There’s a genuine kindness and openness that’s palpable in everyday interactions. I love the spontaneous conversations—whether it’s chatting with someone in the grocery aisle or exchanging stories with an uncle while waiting in line for gas.
Over the years, I’ve built meaningful friendships and connected with a truly welcoming community. The aloha spirit is real and magical—it brings people together in ways I’ve never experienced anywhere else.
Of course, we’re not entirely immune to the occasional unfriendly encounter. Sometimes I pass someone who doesn’t wave or let me merge, and I’m momentarily surprised by the lack of aloha. But those moments are rare, and the vast majority of people here are so kind they remind me to focus on the good and let those small instances go.
Fulfillment in Life
When we lived in California, we seemed to have it all—the car, the job, the house with beautiful views of rolling hills and grazing horses. Yet, I always felt like something was missing. Looking back, I’m not sure why I constantly felt the need for more.
Living here, however, has brought me a sense of fulfillment I didn’t even know I was searching for. There’s a deep sense of self and contentment that I’ve found on the Big Island. Maybe it’s the slower pace, the connection to nature, or the way life here encourages you to savor the simple joys. Whatever it is, this place has helped me feel more grounded, more grateful, and the best version of myself.
The Possibility to Dream Big
Life in a bustling city is filled with noise, distractions, and endless hustle. I often felt like I couldn’t make a difference or even catch my breath.
Over the past decade on the Big Island, we’ve simplified our lives, embraced living with less, and grown accustomed to waiting a few weeks for an Amazon package to arrive. This slower, simpler lifestyle has created space for real reflection on what truly matters. It’s given me the clarity to dream big and the courage to pursue those dreams. Living simply has taught me that dreaming big isn’t just possible—it’s achievable. Life’s endless possibilities are out there, waiting for you to grab hold of them and run. There’s no greater feeling than realizing that the life you’ve imagined is within reach.
Being surrounded by the island’s natural beauty inspires a sense of limitless potential. It fuels creativity, ignites dreams, and gives you the courage to chase them. I encourage you to embrace that inspiration and go after your dreams, too! Even after 10 years of living on this incredible island, Hawaii remains my happy place. It’s not just the stunning scenery that makes it special; it’s the peace, community, and belief in endless possibilities that nourish the soul and inspire me every single day.
I’d love to hear from you—why is Hawaii your happy place? Share your thoughts…
With the warmest aloha,
Leeana
