City Council Approves Haseko's Zoning Changes Around One'ula Beach Park-Ewa Beach Lagoon

After years of highly contested debates between the developer Haseko and residents, the fight is over. Zoning changes have now been approved as of 10/5/2016 for the lagoon and surrounding areas of One’ula Beach Park, better known as Hau Bush to locals.

What Do Residents Think?

The original legal battles started when Haseko was proposing a deep water marina for the area. This resulted in a class action law suites against the developer from homeowners who claimed to have lost or will lose property value if the marina is not built.

The developer changed the path and has since proposed a master plan development around the lagoon. This will include light industrial mixed use, businesses, new golf course club house, residential, and changes to the public areas.

Many locals who have been camping, fishing, and surfing the beach for years feel they will be pushed out and no longer welcome to this new development. The developer has been very careful in trying to incorporate The Kuapapa Preserve and nature trail as a way of preserving some of the old while making way for the new.

One of the last phases of residential development for the builder will be a row of homes with direct ocean views of One’ula Beach Park and the surrounding area. These homes have yet to have a price associated with them, but all indications show these will be the largest and most expensive homes they will build in the area.

Like everything in Hawaii, there is a very delicate balance of preserving and respecting the old while building new.
