Once in a while, we list a property that is a real special offering to buyers. 490 Kaupakalua Rd. (MLS# 352430) is such a property; it is quaint, charming and was once the Peahi School. It is located across from the old Deva Farm and in the middle of an area in Peahi known as “Banana Patch” and is truly a historical icon in Haiku.
The building includes a church which was built in 1938 and had a school building that was moved and attached to it becoming Peahi School in the late 1970‘s. My nephew and niece, Noah and Kinau, used to attend pre-school here in 1979 when there was no public pre-school available at Haiku School.
Sitting in the old church with the windows open, the trade winds softly blowing through caressing your skin, with the aroma of ginger and orange blossoms wafting in is as relaxing and soothing as it gets. With no immediate neighbors, this property feels much larger than 0.6 acres.
The Hawaii Life Value Score grades 490 Kaupakalua a 95 out of a possible 100 points.
What’s Growing on 490 Kaupakalua Rd.?
- Large Trees – Ficus, elephant pod, royal poinciana, bamboo, and paper eucalyptus.
- Fruit Trees – Avocado, Lychee, Lemon, Lime, black sopote, tangerine.
- Flowers – Ginger (red, white, pink, yellow), green and red ti, pua kenikeni, native white hibiscus, (very rare), night blooming Jasmine, antherium, bird of paradise, bromiliads galore, many orchids and ferns, heleconia, (red lobster, parrots, white and more), coleus, and a rare flower that grow like grapes….we don’t know the name but everybody wants one!
Beautiful plants and flowers growing on side of main structure
The present owners have polished this treasure with love and care. It is presently used primarily as a pilates and yoga studio, the potential uses are many. Since it was previously permitted as a pre-school, it may be possible to restore the school permit.
It may also be possible to be used as a church again due to its previous historical use. The building has been used previously as a residence and has kitchen, two bedrooms, and one full as well as one half bath.
What’s Included in This Offering
Interior of 490 Kaupakalua Rd. garage structure
In addition to the main structure, also included is a garage that has been converted to cottage use, so some permits will be required for a legal conversion. Also, there is a small farm office of about 100 sq. ft. presently used as a massage room and a large 2 car carport underneath a massive ear pod tree.
This is a property for a special use or as an unconventional home. If you want a serene spot in the country to just meditate, pick some fruit and flowers, this may be for you.
We are here to answer any questions that you may have on this property, or to set up a viewing request for you. Aloha,

Very true Shaylyn,
Many of the old homes and buildings in Haiku quickly become victims of nature. This place is beautiful.

Oh my God! I leaved in the Chapel, in the 60’s. I was the keeper.
It had no electricity, some cold water and was bare the old chapel.
When I left there a school took over.
It takes make my old heart to see to place.

Do you know of any places similar to this? We are looking for a place that would be up to code for a school, ideally….but any space similar to this would be wonderful.
Thank You,
