Giving Thanks for Our Homes

When you think about holiday memories of years past, is it the presents you recall? The meals? The decor? Or, is it more about the people — your family and friends gathered together in your home and the feelings that you derive from being with those you love?

Almost everyone has some kind of holiday tradition which involves being in a home. Either their own home or someone else’s. Homes provide the setting for family gatherings and holiday traditions. And, they provide so much more.

The Meaning of Home

Our homes represent so much. Think about it. Where do you feel the most accepted? The safest? When you reflect on some of your best memories, was it your home that provided the backdrop for those happy memories? Even in seasons of pain and loss, our homes become our place of refuge and rest. Our sanctuaries.

Homes provide us with security and comfort and they are most often the places we connect with those we cherish the most. We even connect more with ourselves in our homes because at home, we can just be our true selves.

A Place of Gratitude

Our homes reflect our identity and our interests. If you are reading this from your own home, take a look around. I bet a lot of who you are is reflected in your home’s decor and contents. Your lifestyle informs the decisions you make about your home’s function and design and your lifestyle is reflected throughout your home. Whether your home is simple or grandiose, squeaky clean or a cluttered mess, contemporary or classic, it’s yours and you feel at home in it.

So, let’s give thanks for our homes and all that they represent.

May your home be a place of meaningful conversations, of knowing and being known, a place of shared laughter and love, and a place of continued thanksgiving.
