Supporting Local Big Island Farmers with the Farm-2-Table Concept
Another day, another Farm-2-Table masterpiece here on the Big Island! Wednesday night was no different as I met with some dear girlfriends (who also happen to be Hawaii Life colleagues) to celebrate their recent birthdays! We all gathered at Sansei Waikoloa for their “3rd Special Farm-2-Table Wine Dinner.” It was a 5 course meal paired with some really fabulous vino!
Catherine Klug R(S), Katie Minkus BIC, Dave Minkus, Julie Keller R(S), Brooke Derby R(S), and Karen Bail R(B) celebrating at Sansei Waikoloa’s Farm-2-Table Wine Dinner!
The Farm-2-Table Movement
The Farm-2-Table menu was created by Sansei Executive Chef, Keith Endo, and featured all locally sourced and grown items. Being a small organic farmer myself, I truly appreciate this entire “Farm-2-Table” concept that is sweeping the nation.
The farm-2-table philosophy embraces a sustainable approach to agriculture and dining. At its heart, the concept is simple: there is greater value in eating locally. This movement, which picked up speed during the first decade of the 21st century, touts the benefits that are reaped by those who both produce and consume local food, as well as the environment as a whole.
Food and Wine Pairings at Sansei Waikoloa
Local Squash Blossoms With Homemade Ricotta Cheese with Farm Fresh Hamakua Mushrooms and White Wine Butter Sauce
The five course menu featured some of the Big Island’s most famous locally grown food, including Hamakua Mushrooms, WOW Tomato’s, and Kona Main Lobster.
The wine pairings were by Master Sommelier Chuck Furuya, Hawaii’s most sought-after wine expert, and featured wines from small local wine farmers in Italy, France, and the Oregon Coast. The best glass of the evening was the 2009 Evening Land Rose from Oregon. There are only 5 cases in the entire state of Hawaii making it extra special!
Butter Poached Kona Main Lobster with Local Sweet Corn, Fresh Squid Ink House-Made Linguine and Jalapeno Uni Butter Sauce
I understand the importance of supporting our community and hope you will join my effort to buy from and support locally owned farms here on the Big Island. It’s how many local Big Island restaurants are keeping their menus fresh, creative and delicious! You can do the same thing at home too! Hope to see you at the next Farm-2-Table Dinner!
Aloha!
