Living in the heart of Honolulu can have its perks. For professionals working in downtown Honolulu, there are numerous high-rise condos to choose from ranging from the newly constructed ultra-modern to more affordable units built in the 70s and 80s.
Diverse Restaurants & Nightlife
For those seeking the convenience of being close to the financial district of Honolulu, benefits include being close to a plethora of shopping, restaurants, and services. One of my favorite restaurants located downtown is The Pig & The Lady, known for its eclectic Vietnamese and Pan-Asian home cooking using local ingredients. Ask for the off-menu item called the “Mushroom Godzilla,” a monster sandwich with more than 50 ingredients!
Downtown can be a fun place to eat and meet friends after work for drinks, or just relax on the weekends. On the first Friday of every month, nearby Chinatown and its galleries, boutiques, cafes, and restaurants light up with its First Friday event from 5 to 9 pm followed by after-party events at trendy and popular bars in Honolulu.
Farmers Markets Promote Healthy Living
Access to fresh, varied, and inexpensive produce and local foods can be found at two bustling farmers markets downtown at Fort Street Mall on Tuesday and Fridays and Kekaulike Market (daily except Sunday). Market stalls are jam-packed at Kekaulike, veterans have their favorites and come daily or weekly to bargain with their favorite vendors. It’s also fun to “people watch” the rush of buyers, sellers, and activities. Oahu Market and Maunakea Marketplace are hidden gems across the street offering more fish and seafood items and a small food court.
Cultural Diversity Through Food & Community Events
Other notable downtown attractions include the Chinatown Cultural Plaza, a shopping center in Chinatown hosting seasonal community events to perpetuate Chinese culture and tradition. Besides being home to numerous Chinese restaurants, jewelry and gift shops, churches, medical clinics, shops, and offices, the Plaza also offers Tai Chi, Kung Fu, folk dance classes, martial arts, yoga, and karaoke. You can even learn how to play a traditional Chinese instrument here!
