Elton John Concert Fun at the Fairmont Orchid on the Big Island
Elton John loves me…
He must, he played all of my favorites in the first 15 minutes of the private concert at the Fairmont Orchid on the Big Island last night!
The concert was in closing to a 5 day appreciation event sponsored by SAPÂ (technology software co.) for its employees/affiliates and their families which completely bought out five hotels; Hilton at Waikoloa, Mauna Lani, Fairmont Orchid, Hapuna, and Mauna Kea. Owners and residents were politely asked not to come onto the hotel grounds during the five days of their stay.
The fact is, IÂ tried to sneak in with two girlfriends and after being completely humiliated (along with about 50 other people) we stumbled through the lava rock in the dark ’til we hit the golf path to the very elevated 12th tee box of the North Course at Mauna Lani Resort. We tried all the excuses, “We live here (well, I do anyway), you can’t keep us off the shoreline…you know what I mean.” They had heard them all 50 times already by that time of night. We would have paid, of course, but it was private; the nerve!
The tee box is just adjacent to the Fairmont parking lot, and is in direct view and within perfect range of the very loud and clear concert! Wahoo. We danced, drank wine, and giggled the night away with the most awesome lightening show in the background. Then, to top it off, there was a 15 minute fireworks display that we watched lying on our backs as the grand finale! What a spectacular show.
I love the Big Island…oh yeah, and Elton John!
Living and loving the resort life.

Thanks for the report! I saw the fireworks last night and wondered what the concert was like.

Hey kids, shake it loose together
The spotlight’s hitting something
That’s been known to change the weather
We’ll kill the fatted calf tonight
So stick around
You’re gonna hear electric music
Solid walls of sound
– You did Elton proud!

“the concert was for SAP only. for the people that earned it”
How sanctimonious is that….
You talk of ‘earning’ things. Save lives for a paycheck, or defend your country. Then we’ll talk of self-righteous notions such as ‘earning’ something like the privilege to see Sir Elton John in concert. And no, ‘slaving’ at a computer does not count as ‘earning’ anything other than eye strain and a few dollars.
When we met some of these ‘Stupid And Pathetics’, you seemed very full of yourselves. We thought, maybe they’re shy. Nope. Turns out you’re actually ‘Stupid And Pretentious’.
Oh, and that ‘private’ concert? Check YouTube.

@EmmaD: While I understand the concert was for SAP employees “only,” this goes against the aloha spirit here in the islands.
@The Master: First let me say that “The Master’s” comments do not reflect the opinions of Hawaii Life. And, The Master, while I do respect your opinion, it is also important not to judge. Many people have been raised under different circumstances, and we cannot blame these people for the way they were raised. The aloha spirit also encompasses compassion and understanding. And while you might not fully “understand” their position, we can try. Also, no more name calling.

Pam – the concert was great!!! I could hear it perfectly from my backyard in Puako! We even had some friends watching and listening from their boats off-shore… Coolio! I guess next time if a company wants a concert to be private, they shouldn’t have it outdoors….hee.
