Why You Should Consider Spending the Holidays on Maui

I’m dreaming of a white Christmas…but only if you mean white sand. No snow for me. A tradition of mine is to go to the beach on Christmas Day in the morning around 9:30ish. It’s not too crowded or windy. I sit there, take a quick pic (usually of the breaking surf and try to get a few people in the water) with my iPhone, and send it to as many of my friends on the mainland.

“Wishing you a very Maui Christmas,” I say. The remarks come flooding in before I know it. “Jeez, it’s so cold here, I can’t feel my hands or feet,” “Must be nice,” and “Oh, we will come visit next year,” or my personal favorite, “Christmas isn’t Christmas unless there’s snow.” I beg to differ. A sporty Sandman is a better option than a Snowman!

Winter in L.A. vs. Winter on Maui

I lived in Los Angeles, so we never got much snow in the city. We’d always see snow on the distant mountains, which meant that it was going to be really cold. That usually happened in January. The last winter that I spent there was in ’09. It was the coldest one for me. I lived in an uninsulated 1913 house with drafty windows.

There was a number of reasons for my moving back to Maui, but the cold was one of the top 3. I was born and raised on the island and I never got acclimated to anything under 45F. I was glad when Spring came and the weather began to warm. I knew that I had spent my last winter in the LA tundra and I’d soon be home to a consistent 80F.

I did bring along a bunch of long sleeve shirts, jackets, suits, and dress shoes when I moved. I haven’t worn a jacket since the day I left LA. I wear long sleeve shirts for work…sometimes and whenever I use my dress shoes, I have to remove the dust bunnies from inside and around. I did wear a pair of dress shoes to a seminar that I attended last week. My shins hurt for 3 days after.

My point to this, well, there may not be one. If you’ve ever considered spending the holidays in a warm climate, it’s not as bad as people make it to be. We still have Christmas trees, Santa, the manger, and shopping. The only thing different is you can do it all in shorts, a tee shirt, and slippahs! If you do decide to spend Christmas in Hawaii, don’t forget to go to the beach, snap a pic, and send it to everyone you know in the snow.
