While sunshine, sand and ocean sports may not be everything Hawaii Island has to offer, they are among the top draws for visitors and residents alike. Following years of racing at the top of the World, being a multi Ironman Champion, National Champion, training long hours, and now living here in Hawaii, these are my top three picks for getting your swim on!
1. Kailua-Kona Pier
This location is home to the Ironman World Championship held here each October. Enter the water from the small sand beach on the south side of the pier and you are at the start of the Ironman World Championship 2.4 mile swim course.
Buoys are set up about every 200 yards and lead you out to the turn-around point at 1.2 miles. If you’re lucky – usually during morning swims – you’ll find some great partners to join you on your swim as this is the island’s most popular place to train. And, if you’re super lucky, you’ll find some marine creatures enjoying the course, too – spinner dolphins and Green Sea turtles among them.
2. Hapuna Beach
The Annual Rough Water Swim competition is held here during the winter season. On-shore breakers through part of the year make this a popular spot for body surfers and bodyboarders as well.
Highlights include a long stretch of beach-lined, lifeguard protected, calm and crystal clear ocean waters for a close to shore swim. While you’re in the area, be sure to check out Kauna‘oa Bay right next door fronting the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel – it’s a picture perfect, well-protected cove that provides another great place to swim. Luxury homes and villas at these two locations often are available for purchase – both re-sales and newly built properties.
3. Puako
One of the most spectacular stretches along Hawaii Island’s internationally renowned Kohala Coast (aka the “Gold Coast” for all of the luxury resorts and homes found here) there are numerous ocean access points off Puako Road to make your way to the lava-strewn, white sand coastline.
This is a high-end residential community, so homeowners’ privacy is cherished – no trespassing! You can take your pick among the many ocean entry areas clearly marked by state roadway signs. The waters are pristine and relatively shallow with an abundance of coral reefs and sea life.
Be prepared to fall in love with these unique locations and/or others throughout the Hawaiian Islands. Contact me if you are interested in purchasing a primary home, second home or investment property in paradise!
