Living on Kauai provokes all types of inspiration, and for some, such as my ten-year-old daughter, that inspiration manifests itself in waking up very early before school to check the morning surf. This, as she so affectionately calls it, is the Dawn Patrol.
As the tender crescendo of the sun peaked the eastern horizon illuminating the thick mist coming off the crest of the waves, the simple beauty of it all got to me. There is nothing quite as amazing as when I stood on the pier while feeling and seeing the excitement and awe build within my child’s dark brown eyes as she watched the large pounding waves roll in. Dawn Patrol was certainly spectacular today. It makes me truly believe that it’s the simple things that really make you fall in love with Kauai.

It is amazing to watch the passion that she has for all aspects of her life. She is fiercely competitive even with herself and wants to excel at all that she does. However, I think that surfing has really struck a cord with her, it might run in the family and it is obviously not from my side of the gene pool!
