Constructing Change: Safeguarding Hawaii’s Home Building Future With Magnum Board
From a first-hand experience at the home that I lived in at 290 Front St, in Lahaina Town, I can critically say it has become painfully clear that traditional construction practices are ill-equipped to withstand the increasing threats posed by wildfires in Hawaii.
Among the critical shortcomings exposed by these tragic events is the continued use of plywood in roofing and structural sheathing, a practice that jeopardizes the safety and resilience of our island communities. I believe it is time for a bold and decisive shift towards safer, more innovative alternatives, with Magnum Board Building Products emerging as the beacon of hope for Hawaii’s construction industry.
The Peril of Plywood in Fire-Prone Places
Plywood, once heralded as a staple in construction, has proven to be a grave liability in regions like Hawaii, where wildfires pose a constant threat. Its combustible nature renders buildings vulnerable to catastrophic damage, putting lives and property at risk. The recent Lahaina wildfires serve as a stark reminder of the urgent need to reassess our reliance on plywood and embrace alternatives that offer enhanced fire resistance and durability.
The home I lived in at 290 Front St was less than five years old, and its structure, walls, and roofing were nothing more than wood beams, sheets, and composite shingles that were no match for that day. We should have had foresight.
Introducing Magnum Board: The Ultimate Solution
Enter Magnum Board, a revolutionary building material crafted from magnesium oxide now offered in Hawaii. Magnum Board represents a paradigm shift in construction, offering unmatched fire resistance, durability, and structural integrity. Its non-combustible nature makes it an indispensable asset in fire-prone areas like Hawaii, providing a crucial layer of protection against the ravages of wildfires.
Why Hawaii Magnum Board Stands Above Plywood
- Exceptional Fire Resistance: Magnum Board’s unparalleled fire resistance far surpasses that of plywood, ensuring the safety and security of buildings even in the face of raging infernos.
- Durability and Structural Integrity: Magnum Board’s robust composition ensures structural stability, mitigating the risk of collapse and minimizing damage during fire events.
- Resistance to Moisture and Mold: Unlike plywood, which is prone to moisture damage and mold growth, Magnum Board remains impervious to water, ensuring longevity and reducing maintenance costs.
- Eco-Friendly Manufacturing: Magnum Board’s manufacturing process is environmentally sustainable, aligning with the ethos of responsible construction and stewardship of our natural resources.
- Locally Owned: Shall I say more?

Hi MAL – thank you for your reply. I appreciate it, but After a call to HPM here locally, they indicated about they do not stock any MgO Board, nor did they say it was available in special order or through an Oahu affiliate.
According to Hawaii Magnum Board, not all MgO Boards are manufactured the same. This specifically was intended giving information about Magnum Board Building Products which are only available through Hawaii Magnum Board.
I featured them as they are a local Lahaina, Maui company that has had direct impact by fire and passion for innovative change in the building industry. They want to lead the change.
