On March 22nd, the State of Hawaii – Department of Transportation (Highway Division Maui District) hosted an informational session titled, “Dairy Road – Complete Streets Project” at Down to Earth. With the completion of the new airport access road, there are plans to make the current Dairy Road leading to the airport a “complete road.”
The plan would reduce lanes from the current five lanes down to three lanes, one in each direction and a center turning lane. In the proposed plan, it would add sidewalks, bike lanes, and bus stops in hopes it would make it safer for residents to use alternative means of transportation in town.
Top Concerns
With some small business owners in attendance, they voiced concerns that scaling down to just three lanes would create traffic congestion that would just discourage customers from shopping their businesses, opting to go elsewhere with less traffic congestion.
Another concern was, with the closing of Sports Authority and the move of Lowe’s, it leaves larger retail spaces open. The concern was that downsizing the road could possibly prevent recruitment of future national chain stores that might fill those locations.
Project leaders said they are going to take in concerns of the whole community and try and find a solution that will work for all.
