The Big Island beach community of Puako is small-town Hawaii! My 3 kids were all born there. They’re now in their mid to late 20’s and living here in Hawaii, so we all enjoyed the wedding last Saturday in Puako. Having grown up there, my sons enjoyed being back on the beach at sunset as the young couple stood in the water at the edge of the sandy Puako shoreline (yes, her gown got wet, as planned!). Both the bride and groom are awesome surfers! They were both raised in Puako and Kona, & they’re Pepperdine grads too! The occasion reflected on the past 25 years here. The bride, groom and family were all heavily-laden with fragrant flower lei made it a magical island-style experience.
The food was local style and good! It was the ‘who’s who’ of the Island surfing community. Board shapers of all ages were present. It’s always so good to see everyone in one place and in high spirits at the joining of this amazing young couple. Of course, in Hawaii, attorneys, doctors and everything between… they’re all surfers. We enjoyed seeing friends and catching up with latest news.
After much fun, music…dance….I loved driving out of Puako Beach drive at night, hearing the Hawaiian music, seeing the coconut fronds above and the moonlight still bright from the waning full moon. I love all my memories of many nights in Puako. You cannot find this lifestyle or climate anywhere else in the world except Hawaii. Puako is no ka oi!
