96-Acre Cattle Ranch in Hana, Maui

There is no question that Hana, Maui is one of the most incredible places on the face of the planet – its unparalleled natural beauty and strong sense of aloha amongst visitors and residents turn back the hands of time as you lose yourself in this incredible place. It’s no coincidence that the Hawaiian term “hana hou” means to do it again, our newest offering of 1060 Hana Hwy will not only make you want to visit Hana time and time again, but to call it your home on the world’s best island of Maui.

Bird’s Eye View of 1060 Hana Hwy

This aerial shot backs up to the Koolau Forest and shows the ranch below. The ranch is fully fenced and is worked by some Hana ranchers who run over 40 cattle between this property and the adjacent property. The cost to fence this property in 2003 was almost $200,000; it is heavy gauge hog wire designed to keep out feral pigs and contain the cattle. It is about a mile long.

What to Know About 1060 Hana Hwy

With 96 acres of fully fenced cattle pasture, a small, self-sustained cottage with photo-voltaic power, rain water catchment, and 3,000 miles of view, you are just far enough away from everything to be totally private, yet close enough to cover your needs.

If you get to work on your tractor, you should be able to grow enough to sustain all of your needs and there is enough rainfall that you really don’t need to worry about irrigation. With a slope the entire length of the property, almost every spot on the land has an ocean view. In addition, there is a small seasonal stream on the west boundary of the property, so you have intermittent waterfalls.

Sophisticated Base Camp for the Ranch

Hana home interior

Built in 2002, the cottage is a little over 600 sq.ft., with another 400 sq.ft. in covered lanai, and is a very comfortable structure that is perfect in its own right or could be expanded up to 1,000 sq.ft. of interior living area.

Zoning allows construction of a main home in addition to the cottage presently on the property, so you can build a 10,000 sq.ft. home if you want. Additionally, any number of barns, stables, farm accessory buildings, or other farm related structures can legally be built on the property. Power is nearby, but the present owners have chosen to stay off the grid and use satellite for TV and internet.

Most tropical fruits do well here. You can grow papaya, banana, lychee, coconut, kukui nut, mangosteen, durian, longan, and a whole list more. With a small vegetable garden, you can grow year-round and you can be very self sustaining. If you want a quick lunch of local food, get a shrimp plate 5 minutes away.

What We Love About the Hana Life

If you have a choice about where you can work and what your lifestyle is, perhaps you may want to considering living on this property in the middle of the Pacific, with clean air coming across 3,000 miles of ocean, and no traffic or congestion to deal with. Working from the center of the Pacific offers some interesting time zones advantages. You are 12 hours from Europe, 6 from most parts of Asia, and 6 hours from the east coast of the United States.

Venus pool jump off

Learn to fly at Venus pool just a few miles outside of Hana town. On a recent trip to Hana, my kids and nephew, Tim Stice (pictured above), took my wife out to Hana for her 60th birthday. They had a blast cliff jumping and lounging here at Venus pool, which is brackish water filled from a waterfall flowing down from the mountains and the ocean water at high tide pictured above.

Travasa entry

The front entryway at the Travasa Hana Hotel

If you feel the need for some touch with civilization, the property is only 9 minutes to the Hana Airport and 15 minutes to Hana town, which has two grocery stores, a gas station, the Hotel Travassa and restaurant, and a number of small eateries scattered around the area. Hamoa Beach is just a couple of minutes away from the property; this secluded and stunning natural beauty has consistently been rated as one of the top beaches in the world.

Hana horses

My son and daughter-in-law took this photo, which was steps away from their oceanfront cottage at Travasa where they celebrated a recent anniversary.

Red sand beach

Red sand beach is just a couple minutes walk from Travasa and is truly a stunner. The rock wall creates a very protected ocean pool for lounging, swimming, and snorkeling. There is a fun current that runs from the bottom portion of the inner pool out towards the main pool, you just wait for the right condition and it will gently pull you right along into the main pool – my wife loved doing this on her last trip out there.

Large Hana waterfall

A mile up from Oheo Gulch (7 sacred pools) is Makahiku Falls, which is about half way up the Waimoku Falls trail hike. My family has taken our children up this scenic trail through bamboo forests and several swimming pools many times, and it is one of our favorites on the island.

Kaupo

As you head past Kipahulu, you will encounter the Kaupo gap (photo above) which is dry, barren, and feels like another planet. The tropical vegetation disappears dramatically. Parched pastures and grasslands are overtaken by volcanic rock instead of lush vegetation due to Haleakala’s rain shadow, which prevents moisture from accumulating often enough to sustain the area’s plant life.

I’ve found places in this world that have shaken my foundation and stirred my soul; The Giant Redwood groves of California left in awe and feeling a part of something much bigger than myself. A solo trek across Haleakala, quieted me during a time of personal turmoil. One afternoon in Waimea, on the big Island, the physical beauty of the land brought me to tears. I’ve floated through the Okavango in Botswana and have completely lost myself to time and space. I’ve trekked to the roof of the world and stood eye to eye in the faces of Himalayas giants. Some places seem to have an essence so profound it can alter you physiologically. Hana is one of those place for me.

I sold these 96 acres to a Client a few years back. I’d stumbled upon them on the Oahu MLS, while property searching for a Client of mine, who wanted something unique and special, and even though we were looking for homes at Sunset Beach, we we’re intrigued, having both felt the heavenly in Hana on previous visits. My Client fell in love with the beauty of this land and bought it on the spot. Since then I’ve been back a half dozen times, often to chill out from the traffic and demands of work and life on Oahu……and after each stay, I’ve been invigorated and renewed. This property is special, even by Hana standards. Go there if you can, walk the land. It will be good for your soul.
