49th Annual Parker Ranch Fourth of July Horse Race and Rodeo in Waimea (Kamuela)

The 4th of July is rodeo time in Big Island’s Waimea (Kamuela). The 4th of July may be beach time and fireworks for many Hawaiians, but on the Big Island, the 4th of July means horse races and rodeo time in Waimea (Kamuela).

On Monday, July 4th, Parker Ranch will celebrate their 49th Annual Independence Weekend Rodeo and Horse Races at the Parker Ranch Rodeo Arena in Waimea. The fun starts at 9 a.m. and runs until noon. This year’s honoree is Alan H. Gottlieb, who holds the position of Secretary/Treasurer of Ponoholo Ranch Limited and serves as Vice President of Kahua Ranch on Hawai’i’s Big Island.

The rodeo action will begin shortly after 9:00 a.m. with a grand entry parade. The line-up of rodeo events, featuring Parker Ranch cowboys joined by paniolo from ranches all around the Big Island, is full of excitement. Along with the horse races, there will be ribbon mugging, ranch mugging, dally team roping, and the unique-to-Hawai‘i Po‘o Wai U. The Parker Ranch Rodeo has a long history—the first one was held just three years after Hawai’i became a state in 1959.

Tickets for the Monday, July 4th event are $5 per person in advance, or $6 at the gate. Pre-sale tickets are on sale now at the Parker Ranch Store in the Parker Ranch Center, Waimea. Children 10 and under are free. Along with the races and rodeo, there will be local food, pony rides, and a special Parker Ranch Store for take-home gifts of the day. Come see how the Fourth of July is celebrated Paniolo style!
