Kauai’s Green Future
In accordance with or perhaps as a result of the CEI, several solar energy projects have already begun construction on Kauai. One — a 1.21-megawatt Photovoltaic Farm near Kapaa that is capable of providing electricity to 300 homes — has already been completed and is in the process of entering the KIUC (Kauai Island Utility Cooperative) grid.
Other projects in the works include:
- A 3-megawatt facility in Poipu.
- A larger farm just underway on the West side.
- A 6-megawatt project in Port Allen on the South Shore that would be the state’s largest solar power plant, supplying enough energy for 1,800 homes.
With the addition of the Port Allen project, it’s estimated that Kauai could have the highest percentage of solar energy presence on its grid of anywhere in the country. As a testament to the passion Kauai is putting forth, KIUC has committed to producing 50% of the island’s power from renewable sources by 2023.
Half of Kauai…solar powered…in 10 years. This is the future and the future is now.
