How fortunate Maui, Hawaii is to have the PGA Golf Championships played at the Kapalua Plantation Golf Course every January. Sponsored by Hyundai, this year it was played from January 5 to January 9th, including one day of Pro-Am and 4 days of competition.

It normally has a field of approximately 30 players, but this year they had 28 players until Lucas Glover injured his knee paddle-boarding and had to drop out of the competition, dropping the players to 27. This tournament is a little different than most others in that it starts and ends with the same number of players. So, if a player has a bad first or second round, there is no worry of not making the cut, he just needs to pull himself together and he still has a chance to go for the title.
Pro-Am Day
You can have a great time at this tournament getting the pros to sign autographs and get some pictures. They do not allow pictures on the competition days, so the best day to come for pictures and trying to interact with the players is the Pro-Am day. The pros are usually friendly and happy to accommodate the spectators, especially on the Pro-Am day. Once the competition starts, the pros are a lot more focused on their game and not as interested in signing autographs.
The Kapalua Resort
In addition to the Plantation Course, the Kapalua Resort has the Bay Course available as well. Kapalua is a magnificant resort with several condo complexes and homes surrounding the golf courses. Complexes include:
- Kapalua Bay Villas
- Ridge Villas
- Golf Villas
- Coconut Grove
- Ironwoods
- Ritz Carlton
- Several upscale home developments
Watching the golf is pretty exciting, but with views of Molokai right across the ocean and watching the whales, sometimes it is hard to keep your eye on the golf ball! Every year the tournament is also looking for volunteers to help run the huge event. Contact Kapalua Golf Course or contact me, Heidi Farmer, for more information.
