Talk Story #33 – Kewalo Basin, One Example of Kaka'ako's Diverse Opportunities

A peaceful setting belays the fact of activity galore available in this prime area between Honolulu and Waikiki.

Often noted in the Real Estate MLS (Multiple Listing Services) as Lower Makiki, Ala Moana, or even Honolulu, the name of Kaka’ako is being used more often now for that is indeed the area changing steadily from older commercial density toward being a modern, often luxurious condominium residential urban location.

Nearby, Kewalo Basin Park and Kewalo Basin Harbor is the latest fun place to be for the Kama’aina (residents) or visitor. Mike Inc.’s newest creation—a family oriented ice skating rink! Yes, you read that correctly! A Christmas Wonderland without the ice. Environmentally safe, it doesn’t require electricity or water for the indoor rink is created by using a special recyclable plastic material and is coated with a water-based glide enhancer. The surface is slippery and easy to skate on. So, why not?

Along Ala Moana Blvd. there is fantastic shopping, the Ala Moana Beach Park with its penisula called Magic Island (a.k.a. Aina Moana), and is super for individual fishing, swimming, picnics, jogging, tennis, and benches for the famous Hawaiian sunset watching or looking up to weekly fireworks displays.

Commercial world, or the best of worlds, at play!

Late afternoon return to Ala Wai Harbor

Note: In Hawaii, there is often a gathering of family and friends, and in a casual way stories are told of that days happening or past events. We call it “talk story.” My continued series will be about different areas with some history or special opportunities for you today. I would love to hear of your own personal experiences or Hawaii memories to share as I do, from my growing up here during the Territorial days. Whether it is a military move, a casual beach house, a down-sized retirement property, a golf course or oceanfronted resort home-away- from-home, a grand residence with superb view, or a high rise condominium…the choices are many. Let us “Talk Story,” I look forward to it!
