Things I Love About Waikoloa Village

Waikoloa Village is really a great town and I love to show buyers around the town. Thinking about all the things I love about Waikoloa made me want to put everything down in a blog. So, here are some of the wonderful things I love about Waikoloa—you’re welcome to add your own comments on what you love about the village.

I love the location of Waikoloa Village. It’s at a perfect elevation of just under one thousand feet in elevation, so you are cooler than at sea level. Most people don’t need AC, just fans and the trade winds, and this elevation gives much of the village great ocean and mountain views. Plus, the village is just about 30 minutes from the airport and Kona for shopping or work, and about a 20 minute drive to Waimea for work or shopping there. AND, if you want to have fun, the best beaches on the island are a 15 or 20 minute drive away. It’s really located in the middle of the island and close to almost anywhere you want to go.

I love the garage sales in Waikoloa. No contest, Waikoloa is the garage sale capital of the state! The village rules when it comes to garages sales and deals on the weekends, but you have to start early as the pro shoppers will start right after 6 AM to get the best deals. You have to weave your way all around all the loops and side streets to make sure you have hit all the sales. You can score on kids stuff, furniture, clothing…you name it and you can find it on a weekend in Waikoloa, but bring cash and be ready to have some fun haggling a bit!

I love the walkers in Waikoloa! The town has sidewalks along the main drag -Paniolo and several of the subdivisions also have sidewalks. Since many parts of the Big Island lack sidewalks, it’s a bit dangerous to walk along the roadways of other towns, but in Waikoloa it’s safe and very popular with many residents. To many, Waikoloa is known as a “walking town.” In the morning and late afternoon, you’ll see the walkers out and about…walking and usually waving to passing cars. Some walkers will be out with their dogs and some will be pushing strollers; some are young and some are old, but they are all out doing something good for themselves and glad they live somewhere they can walk almost everyday.

Waikoloa Village Golf Course is owned by the Waikoloa Village Association and has reduced fees for members

I love the Waikloloa Village Golf Course. This is one sweet golf course and, if you are an owner in the village, you are entitled to a reduced fee to play here. This is an 18 hole Robert Trent Jones Course that is a great course to play—it has some water holes to shoot over, some par threes you should be able to hit the green on in one and be putting for a bird. It has some scenic ocean views, it has some long holes that test your fairway shots and, sometimes…it has a bit of wind to play with. If you haven’t played this course you really should, it’s a great course at a price way under the resort fees.

I love the snowmen in Waikoloa Village. What? Snowmen in Waikoloa? You bet! Often, when there is a big snow on Mauna Kea, someone with a pickup will drive up and load up their truck with snow. Then, there’s a a few hours of fun for some lucky village boys and girls. Word travels fast around the village also, “Hey, did you see the snowman on the corner of Kimo Nui?” The snowmen may not last too long, but the memories of snowmen by palm trees lasts forever.

I love the fact that Waikoloa Village is an association for the entire village. Waikoloa is very unique as it is an association that everyone that owns property there must join. Every home, condo, and lot owner is a member of the Waikoloa Village Association and pays an annual membership fee. In return, they have use of the community pool, tennis court, and discounted green fees on the golf course.

Also, all members can take part in the annual meeting and vote for the Board of Directors each year. Don’t like something in the village? Show up at the meetings and voice your opinion, or call a member of the board, or run for the board.

It’s easy to see what’s going on in the village—all board meetings are posted on the village website if you’re too busy to attend the meetings in person. No other town on the island has any organization close to this running the town. It’s a great way for residents to have some input on their town.

These are some of the things I love about Waikoloa. If you’re visiting the Big Island, take part of the day and drive up to Waikoloa and discover the town. Waikoloa is a great town to live in or visit. Spend some time in it, and you’ll have your own list of reasons you love Waikoloa too!
